In Vera Oxby's case her eggs came first! She scooped an incredible 12 prizes at the National Poultry Show in 2008, including two 1sts and two 2nds for egg content. She beat off strong competition along the way, with over 31 entries in one class alone!
Vera is a regular at the poultry shows, continually sweeping the board around the country year after year with her delicious free range eggs. She has built up a fantastic reputation and Vera puts this down to correct management and diet. Furthermore, the welfare of her hens is of utmost importance to Vera who believes 'healthy, happy hens produce healthy eggs'. Her Warren hens roam free-range across acres of countryside and choose to lay in bespoke hen houses which are kept scrupulously clean and well ventilated. The chickens eat well too, grazing on fresh grass alongside Dodson & Horrell Layers Pellets. Vera has used Layers Pellets for years, saying 'I firmly believe that this feed is second to none on the market and wholeheartedly recommend them.'
Since becoming involved with the family business at Needham Hill Farm in Kinoulton, Nottinghamshire, Vera has overseen the expansion of their poultry empire from 50 to 800 hens! Vera had to increase her production due to the high demand for her eggs and now has a customer base which includes Colston Bassett Store, Gonalston Farm Shop, the award winning Harts Restaurant in Nottingham and the luxurious Hambleton Hall Hotel and Hambleton Bakery in Rutland. This is an impressive feat, especially when you consider that Vera has never advertised her eggs and has to turn customers away! At a more local level, Vera provides an open door policy 12 hours a day where customers can collect their eggs and leave money in an honesty box, a refreshing approach in 2009!
As well has working extremely hard to care for her hens, Vera is also an active supporter of conservation and the environment. She has planted over 7000 trees on her farm land over the last 12 years, creating 'Vera's Spinney' and 'Oxby's Millenium Wood' which are home to not only her much loved hens but also a large array of wildlife.
Dodson & Horrell would like to congratulate Vera Oxby on her previous successes and wish her the best of luck for 2009. |
